Remember to apply for pension you’ve earned while receiving old-age pension

13.6.2024, News and press releases

Have you worked while receiving old-age pension? The additional pension will not be granted automatically, so you must remember to apply for its payment once you reach your maximum retirement age.

Pension is accrued from work done while receiving old-age pension up until you reach your maximum retirement age. If you work as an employee, your employer will withhold and pay the pension contributions from your earnings and report the earnings information to the Incomes Register. If you are an entrepreneur, you can continue your entrepreneurial activities, without limitations, while receiving old-age pension, and you can freely decide whether or not to take YEL insurance. Additional pension will only be accrued, however, if you voluntarily opt to take YEL insurance for any work done while receiving old-age pension.

The obligation to insure ends at the maximum retirement age for old-age pension, and that is when you can apply for the payment of the additional pension accrued while receiving your old-age pension. The maximum retirement age is 68 for those born prior to 1958, 69 for those born in 1958-1961 and 70 for those born in or after 1962. The payment of any pension earned alongside old-age pension begins, at the earliest, at the start of the month following the month in which you reach your maximum retirement age.

The payment of the pension earned while receiving old-age pension will not automatically begin at the maximum retirement age but must be applied for. Complete an old-age pension application just as you did when initially applying for old-age pension. Don’t worry if you didn’t apply for pension earned while receiving old-age pension immediately when you reached your maximum retirement age, since the application can also be submitted afterwards. The pension can, however, only be granted for a maximum of three months retroactively.

Submit the application for pension accrued alongside old-age pension no earlier than one month prior to the start of the pension payment. You do not need to terminate your employment relationship when you reach your maximum retirement age in order to begin receiving the additional pension. You can, if you wish, agree on the continuation of your work with your employer.
